An Ancient Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) philosophy says that any decisions we make today should consider the effect it will have on seven generations in the future. Oglala Dakota Holy Man, Black Elk, prophesied that great suffering would come upon Indigenous People and it would take seven generations to heal. Anishinaabe Elders have taught us that at the time of the Seventh Fire we will face a great decision. Two paths will lay in front of humanity, one will lead to destruction and suffering, the other to lasting peace. We are now in the time of the Seventh Fire.
Seven Generations teachings remain an important part of many First Nations cultures. If we believe that our actions will affect the lives of our children and our children’s children, we can go forward with a desire to act responsibly. Our Elders guide us to the seven teachings: Love, Respect, Bravery, Honesty, Humility, Wisdom and Truth.
