Arsene Arcand
Arsene Joseph Alexander Arcand is a Nehiyaw (Cree) Indigenous Artist from Kipohtakaw (Alexander First Nation #134) in Treaty no.6 Territory. Arsene utilizes his background of traditional and cultural experience to draw inspiration into his art form and style. He was introduced to soapstone carving from his uncle, artist - Leo W Arcand; and has utilized many different forms of art since his childhood, including painting and sketching.
Arsene was raised with the Nehiyaw (Cree) way of life by his late grandfather, spiritual leader and hereditary chief of Alexander First Nation, Arsene Joseph Arcand Sr. Since then, Arsene has had multiple carvings commissioned from organizations and various other projects for personal collections. Arsene’s work has been commissioned and gifted to various individuals such as the former Chief of Assembly of First Nations - Perry Belgarde to the Honorable Judge Cheryl Arcand-Kootenay to other individuals like Director Jim Whitaker (Producer - Disney’s Peter Pan & Wendy). Arsene continues to work with a soapstone medium to express the story of each stone as it comes to be told and shared with others around Turtle Island.
Arsene Arcand hopes to open his own gallery, perhaps have his works of art showcased around the world; but mostly wishes to help other young Indigenous artists to get their art into the world through proper showcasing and compensation to the artists. Arsene believes that through the lens of Indigenous peoples, the world can have a better look at the beauty of our ways of living.
