Treaties will last “as long as the grass grows and the river flows”. Those words are visually represented in my paintings in acknowledgement of my ancestors.
As a hunting and gathering society who depended on what the land provided, my ancestors considered future generations by signing these Treaties. As long as the land was bountiful it would sustain their grandchildren. With strong values and self determination my people realized this goal. These paintings give insight to the legacy of the Ininew. -Laird Goulet
Laird Goulet's unique and vibrant painting style reflects the spiritual and artistic imprints that have been inherently transferred to him by his Kokums (Grandmothers). Laird uses the power dot to best capture the floral beadwork patterns and rich birch bark biting imprints that his Kokums had mastered before him.
Laird is conscious of the importance of balance and the four directions. His paintings pay homage to the subsistence lifestyle of his Cree Moshums (Grandfathers). Hunting, trapping, fishing is common images used. Laird also enjoys painting the daily chores, collecting firewood, sawing logs and berry picking.
Laird has a great affinity for animals, the plant world and all living things. He has an almost uncanny ability to visualize life from their viewpoint. His use of vibrant colour is influenced by his love of nature.
